Riggy G must have greatly upset prisoners in Nyeri Maximum Prison when he suggested that they start growing their own food instead of waiting to be fed by the government.
While having lunch with them, he passed along the message that growing their own food, would teach them new life skills.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of Kenya announced a new plan for the Nyeri maximum prison: instead of buying food, the prisoners will grow their own.
He said the prison’s 88 hectares of land will be set up for farming and equipped with water systems. This will provide food not only for the prison but also for Kiganjo police college and nearby hospitals.
Riggy G explained that this farming project will teach inmates how to farm, giving them skills for life after their sentence. The government will also improve prison facilities to offer courses in farming, mechanics, and carpentry.
These skills will help inmates support themselves once they’re out of prison. Gachagua emphasized that President William Ruto’s government is committed to refurbishing facilities and offering training in farming, manufacturing, and other skills to help inmates start fresh lives after their release.
