Rigathi Riggy G spent the New Year’s day serving food to the inmates at King’ong’o prison in Nyeri.
He decided to spend the day at the prison to celebrate the New Year with the prisoners and spread good cheer. Unfortunately for Kenyans, he will leave the prison at the end of the day because he hasn’t been imprisoned yet.
Riggy G’s full statement follows:
Celebrating the start of the New Year, 2024, with inmates of Nyeri Maximum Security Prison, Nyeri Medium Security Prison and Nyeri Women Prisons today with my Spouse, Pastor Dorcas, underpinned the urgency of expediting reforms for our correctional services to add value to Nation building.
The Government is keen on transforming the National Police Service, the Kenya Prisons Service and the National Youth Service to improve service delivery as recommended by the National Taskforce on Police Reforms Report.
Beyond positively transforming the lives of inmates in character and prepare them for a productive life and rejoining their families after sentences, we are investing in development of skills in diverse professions. Behind the bars, lie immense talent and abilities that have to be harnessed and exploited as part of fulfilling the aspirations of the Ruto Administration’s Plan.
We were joined by Principal Secretary, State Department for Correctional Services Salome Muhia Beacco, Commissioner General Prisons Service Brigadier (Rtr) John Warioba, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Senator Wahome Wamatinga, the clergy and other leaders.
Gachagua promised that the gov would figure out ways for the prison to grow its own food, selling extra stuff to the Kenya Police College.
Pastor Dorcas Gachagua talked to the inmates too, giving a speech about not giving up even though they’re in jail. She told them to work on changing themselves and being good citizens.
The New Year’s Day trip to Kingongo Prison shows that the Kenya Kwanza crew is serious about making changes and helping prisoners get back into society after their time inside.
