Lately Kenyan parents have been obsessed with the quality of the schools to which they will send their children to. In general, high schools all tend to have boarding facilities so kids tend to be away from their parents for lengthy periods as much as 3 months. During this period, who advises them? Who disciplines them? Who gives them spiritual guidance?
Parents are seeking schools that can provide all round growth and fulfillment. However, the teachers beg to differ.
Feliciah Mwanambuko a teacher in a Kenyan school thinks not. She says”Dear parents please note that as a teacher I can only teach your child things such as number line what is Geography and importance of studying Geography. Other things such as manners, morals… Please may I, excuse me… Are yours to teach at home. If the foundation is right, they can internalize and apply the knowledge they receive in school to shape themselves up and form their character. All these said, remember this is kamamy and kadady generation and must be handled with care. Any harsh tone or punishment from the teacher is termed as torture and the teacher risks losing their career. Hence, teach and go home. Remind your daughter that after four years, she will come back alone and not with her friends/classmates. Thank you.”
Other parents who participated in the discussion reiterated the need to talk to your child, there is no a safe schoolLet her carry Morals from your home to school.
Another stated
“There’s no good school just good pupils. If you’ve brought up your kid well, trust that they are going to make the right choices. My son is in a school feted for discipline but the stories he tells me, hakukosi students that will still make wrong choices. IMO”
So parents, there’s the verdict. You must teach your children. The teachers are not role models. They are there to transfer specific technical knowledge on the subjects they have been trained on. Morals and sexual education is on you.
