Life is not always easy for the King of the jungle. When a lion receives his mating call of duty, he is required to muster up all the stamina/styles and tactics he has to satisfy his lioness.
When a lioness is in heat and looking to mate, she calls all the shots. She decides when, where and how often mating takes place. Kings job is to⦅.well, get the job done.
Females are receptive to mating for three or four days within a widely variable reproductive cycle. During this time, a pair generally mates every 20β30 minutes, with up to 50 copulations per 24 hours. The male’s equipment has sharp spines causing serious discomfort for his partner. He is also prone to biting her while she may swat in return.
Such extended copulation not only stimulates ovulation in the female but also secures paternity for the male by excluding other males.
