Canadian detectives are currently investigating the tragic passing of a 46-year-old Kenyan who lost her life after spending hours in the cold while seeking refuge at Mississauga Refugee Camp.
Delphina Ngigi sought asylum at the Dundas Street camp on Saturday, February 17, but was denied entry due to capacity issues. Despite this, she was eventually granted shelter and a place to rest. The next day, her health deteriorated, leading to her collapse and subsequent death upon arrival at the hospital.
The camp managers faced criticism for not allowing Ngigi access to shelter, prompting African advocacy groups to demand justice for the deceased. The GTA Africa-Canada lobby group expressed solidarity with the Kenyan community and emphasized the need to prevent such tragedies.
Ngigi, a recent arrival in Canada and a mother of four in Kenya, will have an autopsy conducted to determine the cause of death before her body can be repatriated for burial arrangements. The Rwandan Canadian Healing Centre’s founder pledged to handle funeral arrangements and ensure justice for Ngigi.
This heartbreaking incident echoes a similar tragedy where another Kenyan woman passed away in Ireland under mysterious circumstances, reportedly due to relationship issues.
